Spring on Mallorca

Mallorca in close-up

If you book Mallorca for a short break in the spring, you will find a lot of new places you should look at, but also a few classics, which you should either visit again or again by Birgit Unger.

From time to time, I am asked if I could summarize my personal island tips for a blog or a column. This includes, of course, the latest restaurants and hotels to test and evaluate, but also the country-style tapas bars or walking trails that you should just know if you want to see Mallorca at its best. If you are only coming back for an extended weekend, the chic renovated old town palaces in the city center, recently opened as boutique hotels, are ideally located. The Can Alomar or the Sant Francesc Hotel Singular are two addresses, we gladly recommend. Here you can also simply look for a glass of wine or dinner.

Around Easter begins the summer season with a wide range of activities, from water sports to museum visits. Whether on the sea or inland, the island is constantly reinventing itself and there is always much to discover. After a relaxing beach day in Puerto Portals, a visit to the Zhero Beach Bar, located directly on the White Sand Beach of Magaluf, is the right mix of casual music and a modern health food card. From here, you can see the new Meliá Calviá Beach, the hotel opened in 2016 and offers, besides trendy interior design, also 180-degree-dream-view of the sea from the modern suites at affordable prices.

Tip: As far as possible, book a room and pay close attention to the category. The mountain view is however also in order. Of course, the Nikki Beach Club is next door a well-known address here for a fun day at the pool, but we would suggest as an alternative to the Bardot Lounge Bar at the Gran Meliá Mar in Illetas. Here you can sunbathe as in Cannes and dinner afterwards the Arrels by Marga Coll as a crowning conclusion is only a stairs higher up.

If you want to use the spring temperatures for a day of hiking, you can take the path down to the restaurant Ca's Patromarch just before Valldemossa - with a view of the famous Felsentor, past wild donkeys and through the olive grove until you reach a simple fish dish and a Good wine that enjoys the tranquility. You can reach here only by foot or by boat, the return way should not be entered too late. Water sports enthusiasts will find a wide range of opportunities to spend a hot day with paddle surf (also in XL), kayak trips, windsurf lessons or flyboard lessons at Port Cala Nova in Sant Agustí.

Tip: The Kokomo Surf Café is located just one bay further to the left for the Sundowner to modern tapas or a veggie burger.
